Goddess sculpture - Akuba (Africa c 1900 c.e.)
These goddess sculptures are reproductions of original pieces excavatged in various parts of the world.
The clay pieces are sagger fired, rendering the caly vitrified (in a fired state) but leaving it porous, thus making it perfect for annointing with your favorite essential oil. The clay will hold the oil and slowly diffuse the scent over a period of time.
Akuba - Akua'maa are beautiful wooden lunar figures that the Asante women of Ghana traditionally use to ensure the countinuite of their matriliny, or descent through the female line. Akua'ba literally means "Akua's child", from the story of a woman named Akua who, by carrying one of these figures became pregnant and gave birth to a healthy, beautiful daughter. These sculptures are washed, dreassed, adorned with beads, nursed and carried on the backs of women as an act of magic - that is, an act of encouraging change through thoughts and symbolic action.
These images resemble the shape of the ankh, the ancient Egyptian symbol for life which is related to our contemporary symbol for woman.

The Bird Headed Snake Goddess (Africa C 4000 B.C.E.) Goddess of Thanksgiving, celebrating life incarnate. The triumphantly female Bird-Headed Snake Goddess comes to us from the predynastic Egypt. This sculpture is sometimes considered to be a worshipper of the Goddess, sometimes the Goddess herself. Yet she is both, reflecting the ancient knowledge that human and divine are one, just as she integrated the earthly snake and celestial bird.

Bird Woman - The Inuit carving portrays a woman assuming the form of a bird as she moves into trance. In traditional shamanic trance journeying, one files up in the air or dives deep into the earth or sea. In the culture of the Inuit, which means 'spirit', shamans play an important role, for they act as healers and help maintain balance in the community. Throughout the world, shamans have been described as shape-shifters who possess the power to transform themselves. Birds have been associated with women in a sacred context from at least 20,000 b.c.e.

Transformation Cycladic Goddess - This beautiful statue comes from the Cycladea Islands off Greece. While many of the Cycladic images are standing, all seem to be in meditation or trance. The absence of facial features imply an emphasis on what we call altered states of consciousness. These deities are related to the death and rebirth aspect of the Goddess, since the 'death' of the ego, even if only temporary is necessary for deep meditation.
